A Comfortable Night in University Dorms

Mayor Phedonos was happy with his stay in the university dorms, describing the night as smooth and comfortable. “Everything worked to perfection,” he said. The mayor expressed satisfaction with the near completion of the facility, stating that the project is “99 percent ready,” with both the building and its surrounding areas prepared to welcome students.

Modern Facilities for Students

The new university dorms are designed with students’ comfort in mind. Each room is well-equipped with modern amenities, ensuring students have everything they need for their academic and personal lives. According to the mayor, “Each room has all the possible comforts for students, including a TV, a modern cooking hub, a desk for studying indoors, and a smaller desk on the balcony with two chairs.”

This hands-on approach to testing the dorms is part of a broader effort to ensure that the facilities meet the needs of the students who will be living there. Rector Zaphiris agreed with the mayor, stating that this process allows them to properly assess the dorms’ quality and functionality.

First Students to Move In

The university dorms will soon be home to 140 students from the Cyprus University of Technology (Tepak), 15 from the American University of Beirut, and three from Neapolis University. The first residents will receive their room keys on Wednesday. Additionally, medical students from universities in Nicosia who are completing internships at Paphos Hospital have also requested accommodation.

Green Spaces and Future Facilities

Mayor Phedonos highlighted the importance of the surroundings of the university dorms, noting that special attention was given to green spaces and tree-lined areas to create a pleasant environment for students. The dorms are not just about providing a place to live but also about ensuring that students have access to quality facilities that enhance their overall experience.

“We aimed to give students the best possible facilities,” the mayor said. The facility was completed in just 11 months and cost €16 million. It consists of 203 rooms and will provide housing for students from all universities in Paphos.

Dining and Future Developments

The mayor and rector, along with other officials, also enjoyed a meal together in the dorms’ shared kitchen. This was part of their effort to fully experience what the students will encounter during their stay in the university dorms.

Looking ahead, there are additional plans to improve the facility further. Mayor Phedonos revealed that future developments include the construction of basketball and tennis courts, as well as expanded parking spaces. These features aim to provide more recreational options for students and accommodate the growing number of residents.

“We hope this will be just the first of many similar projects in Paphos,” the mayor said, hinting at more student housing projects in the future.

Growing Student Population

Tepak’s presence in Paphos has significantly grown in recent years. Rector Zaphiris praised the efforts of the municipality in supporting this expansion. He pointed out that Tepak’s Paphos campus had only 150 students last year, but this year, the number has risen to 600. The increase in the student population has driven the need for more university dorms, making this new facility a crucial addition to the city’s infrastructure.
