Why Elon Musk’s X Is Struggling with Technical Problems
Despite being one of the world’s richest men, Elon Musk continues to face technical problems with his platform, X. These issues were on full display during a recent interview with former President Donald Trump, which was delayed for 40 minutes due to technical glitches. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time X has encountered such problems, raising concerns about the platform’s reliability.
High-Profile Glitches on X
The interview with Donald Trump was meant to be a major event, but instead, it highlighted X’s ongoing technical problems. The conversation was delayed for 40 minutes as the platform struggled to handle the live stream. This incident follows a similar situation in May 2023, when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis tried to launch his presidential campaign on X. His event was also plagued by issues, with glitches delaying his speech.
Attempted Fixes and System Scaling
Aware of past problems, Elon Musk attempted to prevent another failure by performing “system scaling tests” on X’s audio chat feature, known as Spaces, the day before the Trump interview. However, even with these preparations, the platform couldn’t cope with the technical challenges. At one point, about 1.3 million people were tuned in, and the platform’s inability to manage this volume quickly became apparent.
Claims of a Cyber Attack
As the issues unfolded, the word “crashed” started trending on X, with users discussing the platform’s failure. While some criticized Musk, others suggested that the interview was so popular it “crashed the internet.” Musk himself pointed to a possible cause: a cyber attack. He claimed that X was experiencing a “massive DDoS attack,” which is a type of cyber attack that overwhelms a website, making it difficult or impossible to use.
Experts Weigh In on the DDoS Claim
The claim of a DDoS attack has been met with skepticism. While some experts, like Matthew Prince, CEO of security firm Cloudflare, acknowledged that a DDoS attack was possible, he noted that it’s hard to verify without more information. Cloudflare doesn’t provide security for X’s Spaces system, but they did offer their help to Musk.
On the other hand, Alp Toker, director of Netblocks, suggested that the issue was more likely related to the number of live listeners rather than a cyber attack. He pointed out that Musk’s decision to limit the number of listeners to fix the problem doesn’t align with typical DDoS mitigation strategies. The lack of typical DDoS signs, such as network congestion and packet loss, also makes the cyber attack explanation less likely.
Workforce Cuts and Their Impact on X
A more straightforward reason for X’s technical problems could be linked to the significant workforce reductions Musk implemented after taking over the platform. Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, noted that Spaces has struggled historically when large numbers of users join. These issues may have been worsened by Musk’s decision to lay off a large portion of X’s employees, including many engineers.
Rashik Parmar, head of the Chartered Institute for IT, echoed these concerns. He argued that even if X was targeted by a cyber attack, the massive reduction in staff would inevitably weaken the platform’s ability to defend itself. Engineers are critical in protecting platforms like X from cyber threats, and without adequate staffing, their ability to safeguard the network is compromised.
The Bigger Picture: X’s Technical Limitations
Whether due to a cyber attack or internal issues, the result of the Trump interview was clear: X’s technical problems remain a significant hurdle. What was supposed to be a showcase of X’s capabilities instead highlighted its ongoing struggles. Musk has often spoken of his vision to transform X into an “everything app,” but these recurring issues suggest that the platform still has a long way to go before it can fulfill that ambition.
Conclusion: Addressing X’s Technical Problems
The ongoing technical problems faced by X raise questions about the platform’s future. While Elon Musk has ambitious plans for X, these frequent glitches indicate that there are still fundamental issues that need to be addressed. Whether it’s the result of cyber attacks or the consequences of drastic workforce cuts, X must find solutions to improve its reliability and performance, especially during high-profile events.
Moving forward, X will need to invest in its infrastructure and possibly rebuild its engineering teams to prevent similar issues from occurring. As the platform aims to evolve into an all-encompassing app, it’s crucial that it overcomes these technical problems to maintain user trust and achieve its full potential.
