Paris 2024 Olympics Athletics: Tough Day for Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Parul Chaudhary
A Disappointing Day for India at Paris 2024 Olympics Athletics
India faced a tough day in the athletics events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, as both Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Parul Chaudhary were unable to qualify for the finals in their respective events. The day was marked by missed opportunities and unfortunate results for the Indian athletes, despite their efforts and previous successes.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s Struggles in Men’s Shot Put
Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a two-time Asian Games gold medalist, had a challenging performance in the men’s shot put event. Competing in a field of 16 athletes, Toor finished 15th, falling short of the direct qualification standard. His best throw of the day was 18.05 meters, achieved on his first attempt. Unfortunately, his subsequent two attempts were fouls, leaving him far from the direct qualification mark of 21.35 meters.

Falling Short of Expectations
Toor’s performance in Paris was disappointing, especially considering his national record of 21.77 meters in men’s shot put. Despite this, he was unable to secure a place among the top 12 athletes who advanced to the final. In fact, Toor finished 29th overall, placing him last in the qualification round. Reflecting on his performance, Toor expressed his disappointment but also highlighted the emotional and physical challenges he faced leading up to the Olympics.
“Today was a hard day for me,” Toor shared on Instagram. “I intended to perform my personal best but couldn’t. The journey to the Paris 2024 Olympics was not easy; I endured many emotional setbacks and injuries, still going through ankle pain. But representing my nation at the biggest sports event in the world is also fortunate. If we cherish the victories, we should also accept the defeats. It’s true sportsmanship.”
European Champion Leonardo Fabbri Tops the Qualifiers
In the same event, European champion Leonardo Fabbri of Italy led the qualifying round with an impressive throw of 21.76 meters, setting the standard for the final. Toor’s failure to qualify was reminiscent of his experience at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he also fell short, finishing 18th in the qualifiers with a best throw of 19.99 meters, while the direct qualification mark was 21.20 meters.

Parul Chaudhary’s Season Best Not Enough in Women’s 5000m
Meanwhile, Parul Chaudhary faced her own set of challenges in the women’s 5000m event. Despite achieving a season’s best time of 15:10.68, Chaudhary finished 14th in her heat, missing out on a spot in the final. The 29-year-old runner needed to finish within the top eight to advance, but she was unable to do so, finishing just 0.33 seconds shy of her own national record of 15:10.35.
Top Performers in Women’s 5000m
The heat in which Chaudhary competed was topped by Beatrice Chebet of Kenya, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, who finished with a time of 15:00.73. Another Indian athlete, Ankita Dhyani, also competed in the women’s 5000m but had an even tougher time, finishing last in her heat with a time of 16:19.38. In that heat, two-time Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon of Kenya dominated, clocking in at 14:57.56.

Overall Standings and Future Hopes
Overall, Parul Chaudhary ranked 24th in the women’s 5000m qualification round, while Ankita Dhyani finished 40th and last. Despite the disappointing outcomes in the 5000m event, Chaudhary still has a chance to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics athletics, as she is set to participate in the women’s 3000m steeplechase heats on Sunday. As the only Indian athlete competing in two events in Paris, Chaudhary will be looking to bounce back and deliver a stronger performance.
Looking Forward: Lessons from Paris 2024 Olympics Athletics
The Paris 2024 Olympics athletics events have proven to be challenging for India’s athletes so far. The performances of Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Parul Chaudhary highlight the difficulties and pressures of competing on the world stage. Both athletes have shown resilience in the face of adversity, but their struggles serve as a reminder of the level of competition at the Olympics.
