Flood Situation Improving in Tripura, Over 1 Lakh People Still in Camps
The flood situation in Tripura is slowly getting better, as water levels in most rivers across the state have started to recede. However, the River Gomati in Sonamura continues to flow above the danger mark, keeping the situation tense in some areas. While conditions are improving, many challenges remain, especially for those who have lost their homes and are still seeking shelter in relief camps.
Flood Waters Begin to Recede
According to reports from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), the flood situation in Tripura has shown signs of improvement. Water levels in most rivers have decreased, giving some relief to the affected regions. However, the River Gomati is still above the danger mark in Sonamura, which has left local authorities on high alert.
The heavy rainfall that battered the state over the past week has eased over the last two days, allowing water levels to gradually drop. Bodhjungnagar recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, with 42.5mm of rainfall, according to weather officials. Even though the rain has slowed down, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of possible heavy rainfall in certain areas of the state, which could worsen the situation again.
Human Toll and Relief Efforts
Despite the improved conditions, the flood situation in Tripura has already taken a significant toll. The death count remains at 26, with two people still missing, as confirmed by SEOC officials. More than 1.17 lakh people are still housed in 525 relief camps across the state as they wait for conditions to stabilize enough to return to their homes.
The damage to homes has been extensive, with a total of 20,289 houses affected. Out of these, 1,610 houses were completely destroyed, while 1,633 homes were severely damaged, and 17,046 were partially damaged. The damage to infrastructure has also been severe, with roads and highways affected by landslides and heavy rainfall.
National Highway-8, which is a critical roadway in Tripura, suffered significant damage in the Atharamura Range due to landslides and the relentless rain. Although authorities managed to reopen the highway to light vehicles on Sunday, the repairs are ongoing, and the situation remains fragile.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts for different regions in Tripura. While some areas are beginning to recover, others remain at risk. A red alert (take action) was issued for the South Tripura district, and an orange alert (be prepared) was announced for the Dhalai and Gomati districts. These warnings indicate that further heavy rainfall could cause renewed flooding in these regions, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
The state government has been actively involved in providing relief to the affected people. Tripura’s Governor, Indrasena Reddy Nallu, visited Pratapgarh English Medium School in Agartala on Sunday, where many flood-affected people have taken shelter. During his visit, he emphasized the importance of taking precautionary measures against diseases, which often follow in the wake of floods. “People have started going back to their homes now. But there is another problem related to diseases. Precautionary measures need to be taken,” said the Governor.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also visited the residence of Chiranjit Sen, a 30-year-old man who tragically lost his life while trying to save others during the floods. CM Saha met with Sen’s family in Indranagar, West Tripura district, and handed them a financial aid of Rs 4 lakh. He also assured them that the government would help rebuild their home and ensure that the family is covered under social pension schemes. Sen was the only breadwinner in his family, which included his elderly parents, one of whom had suffered a stroke.
Political Response and Calls for Support
The flood situation in Tripura has prompted the state government to hold an all-party meeting to discuss relief efforts and ways to tackle the crisis. CM Saha urged all political parties to work together in supporting the relief and recovery operations, emphasizing the importance of unity during such difficult times.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties have been actively involved in providing aid to the flood-affected people. CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury and other Left leaders visited families in Madhya Banamalipur, a neighborhood in Agartala that was heavily affected by the floods. Chaudhury criticized the government and Agartala Municipal Corporation for failing to provide adequate assistance to the people in these areas. He also announced that the local CPI(M) leaders had arranged food for the affected families and that they would soon organize a medical camp to provide necessary healthcare services to the flood victims.
Chaudhury has called for a central government team to visit Tripura and assess the damage caused by the floods. He believes that a proper assessment is essential for securing the financial aid and resources needed for rebuilding the state and helping the people recover from this disaster.
The Road to Recovery
As the flood situation in Tripura slowly improves, the road to recovery will be long and challenging. The focus will now shift to rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts, ensuring that those who lost their homes and livelihoods can return to normalcy as soon as possible.
While many have started returning to their homes, there is a pressing need for health and sanitation measures to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, which are common after floods. The state government, along with local authorities, will need to work closely with healthcare providers to address these risks and ensure that people receive the necessary medical attention.
The reopening of key roads and highways, like National Highway-8, will also be crucial for enabling relief operations and ensuring that supplies reach the affected areas. The government will need to prioritize infrastructure repair to prevent further disruptions, especially if the rains return.
Conclusion: A Community United in the Face of Crisis
The flood situation in Tripura has been a test of resilience for the people of the state. While the worst may be over, there is still much work to be done. From providing shelter to ensuring health and safety, the challenges ahead are significant. However, with coordinated efforts from the government, political parties, and the community, Tripura can rebuild and recover stronger than before.
